Mountain of Faith

“My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?”  That’s what He said, Jesus, on the day He was crucified, after climbing His mountain.  And while hanging from the cross with blood dripping cuts from His broken body, before He looked into His mother’s eyes for the last time and gasped His last breath, He gave God the benefit of the doubt and said, “Father, into Your hands I commit My spirit.

What were the Iraqi Christians thinking as they were climbing their mountain?  Dirt between their toes, droplets of fear rolling down their faces, jihad sin in the air, what were they thinking? Looking ahead used to mean preparing a family meal and putting the kids to bed now it means the horrific terror of awaiting their destiny.  Will they starve to death on their mountain of faith or get beheaded or even worse, will they witness their Christian children being cut in half by the brutal extremist group ISIS? Did mothers and fathers utter under their breaths so their children wouldn’t hear the fear in their voices, “My God, my God, why have you forsaken us?”

Like Jesus and the Iraqi Christians  I choose to climb my mountain of faith.  And when those in their ignorance and arrogance and mere fear throw stones of rejection and insult in my face and when I am persecuted for what I believe and judged for my failures, I will stand. I will stand firm in my faith knowing the God who made the mountain I climb is the God who raised Jesus from the dead who is waving the flag of forgiveness and salvation and peace and hope and freedom and victory and eternal life for all the world to see at the top of my mountain.

What about the mountain you are climbing?  Who made your mountain?  And when you get to the top of your mountain what will you find?

“I will never leave you nor forsake you” Hebrews 13:5
